Key
Issues for Nepal
Massive
poverty reduction: As one of the poorest countries in the world
today, Nepal's prosperity will depend largely on the efficient use
of natural resources, modernization of its agricultural sector and
development of non-agricultural sectors, namely tourism
Reducing
social discrimination: While it is illegal to discriminate on a
gender
or caste basis, women and minority/lower caste members are still
marginalized, especially among rural and uneducated populations
Improved
natural resource management: Though small in size, Nepal is rich
in water resources and
bio-diversity. The forest resources, including a vast supply both
timber
and non-timber forest products, and an immense hydropower potential
have yet to be exploited
Improved
governance: Nepal is in the midst of a political transformation
that began in 1990. A new model of governance must be found so that
civil society is given a larger role in the decision-making process.
Solving the Maoist-government confrontation forms a significant
part of the issue at hand, as the insurgency is fueled by resentment
over the lack of participation by, and socio-economic benefits from,
the "democratic" system implemented decades ago

Uniterra
Despite the difficult political situation in Nepal,
Uniterra's partners are active in three program sectors: rural micro-finance,
non-timber forest products, and dairy productions. The program
supports producers associations in the development of practices
that protect natural resources. For each of the sub-sectors, we
work with Apex Bodies of community based organisations. Currently,
we are working with the Nepal Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperative
Unions Ltd. (NEFSCUN) for rural micro-finance, the Federation of
Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN) for non-timber forest products,
Central Dairy Cooperative Association Ltd. Nepal (CDCAN) for dairy
and Nepal Technical Assistance Group (NTAG) for health.

Water Users Associations in the Project areas would not only significantly
contribute to the economic growth at the local level, but also lay
the foundation for a strong and vibrant civil society in Nepal.
