In
Nepal, a decade long armed conflict created complex challenges
for sustainable development efforts in the field, and it also
created interesting opportunities which need to be shared. The
armed conflict in Nepal started in 1996 and the popular movement
for restoration of democracy reached its height in early 2006.
Since key stakeholders (Seven Party Alliance, Maoists and Civil
society) have joined hands to end direct rule by the King, the
dawn of peace has been seen since April 2006. However, the peace
process has still to move through different phases of conflict
resolution. We feel that the time is ripe for sharing on the Nepal
experience of the last decade with others who are experiencing
similar challenges and to learn from others in order to better
face the upcoming transition. For this reason, the Canadian Centre
for International Studies and cooperation (CECI) is organizing
on "International Conference on Sustainable Development
in Conflict Environments: Challenges and Opportunities"
in Kathmandu.
Co-hosts of this event are: Federation of Community Forest Users
Nepal (FECOFUN), Human and Natural Resource Studies Center - Kathmandu
University, Institute for Conflict Management, Peace and Development
(ICPD) and Swiss National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR).
The Objective of the conference is to:
Contribute
to conflict transformation and peace building by sharing the challenges
and opportunities in working towards sustainable development in
conflict environments.
The major themes of the conference are:
1) Development and conflict
2) Community participation and conflict management
3) Right-based development approach and conflict
4)Conflict transformation and peace building
The
conference will take place on January 16-18, 2007, in Kathmandu,
Nepal.
Resource persons from Nepal and abroad will facilitate discussion
forums on thematic papers. Development practitioners, community
organisations, policy makers and academics working in conflict
are encouraged to participate. You can participate by presenting
a paper, displaying your tools in the CSDA Marketplace and/or
signing up for the different Discussion Forums. A technical committee
will select papers based on the abstracts presented for the different
themes. A formal call for papers and more detailed agenda has
been posted. Organizations and experts wishing to co-host and/or
support the organization of the conference are most welcome and

Canadian Centre for International Studies and Cooperation
(CECI), a non-profit organization, has been working in Nepal
since 1987 supporting the socio-economic development of poor
people living in the western hilly districts, with the support
of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and
other donors. Over the past decade, CECI has implemented a
number of projects in the conflict environment of Nepal through
the promotion of community-based organisations (CBOs). The
common goal of these projects is to contribute to poverty
reduction through integrated community health and economic
development supported by institutional development. With its
partners, CECI designed and implemented numerous Conflict
Sensitive Development Approach strategies such as; Peace and
Conflict Impact Assessment, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion,
Rights-Based Approach and Interest-based Negotiation. CECI
has also gained international expertise working in conflict
environments in other continents (Africa, Latin America and
Eastern Europe). |
