Introduction:

The SHOPS project, co-funded by USAID and CECI-Asia, was implemented in partnership with two national NGOs; Support Activities for poor producers of Nepal (SAPPROS-Nepal) in three VDCs of Dailekh and Community Welfare and Development Society (CWDS) in two VDCs of Nuwakot.

Goal and Purpose:

The Goal of SHOPS was poverty alleviation of rural people through sustainable increase in their income while the purpose was to raise the level of income of disadvantaged rural families through self-reliant and sustainable development activities implemented by Nepali NGOs in the productive sectors.

Objectives:

  • To enable the disadvantaged families of the project area to plan and implement economic activities leading to an increase in their level of income.
  • To strengthen the organizational and technical capability of counterpart Nepali NGOs to manage programs aimed at promoting sustainable development.

Strategies and Approaches:

The main strategies and approaches adopted by SHOPs were to:

  • assist target communities in raising their income through involving them in the production and marketing of high value agricultural products.
  • facilitate institutional development through the formation of farmer groups, cooperatives and production and marketing associations (PMAs)
  • mobilize local resources through the promotion of savings ad credit program to support the income generating activities
  • encourage active participation of women in savings-credit and income generating activities.
  • initiate community development works like drinking water and literacy programs as entry point programs.
  • enhance the management and technical capacity of partner NGOs to undertake development projects.
